Democrat Albert
Baldeo Wins Prominent Endorsement of District Council 37 for State
Assembly
New York City’s Largest Public
Employees Union makes First Major Labor Endorsement in Assembly
Race
Albert Baldeo, candidate for the 38th
Assembly district in Queens, today announced that he has received
the endorsement of New York
City
labor union DC 37. With 125,000 members and 56 active local
chapters, DC 37 represents public employees working in every sector
of municipal government, including hospitals, libraries, social
service centers and city colleges.
“We strongly believe that Albert has the
right experience and dedication needed to represent his constituents
in Albany,” said Lillian Roberts, Executive Director
of District Council 37. “Our pick was easy given his record of
results and service in his own community.”
“I am truly honored and humbled to receive
the endorsement of District Council 37,” said Albert Baldeo,
candidate for the 38th Assembly district. “As Assemblyman, I will
work tirelessly to enact meaningful change that will ensure the
residents of this district have quality and affordable healthcare,
private contracting will be held accountable, and that we never lose
sight of the commendable work that city employees accomplish each
day.”
Among the many chapters affiliated with DC
37 include those of Metropolitan Museum of Art, Queens Library
Guild, NYC Laborers and NYC Board of Education Employees.
District Council 37 is an affiliate of the
larger and nationally well-known American Federation of State,
County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME for short. AFSCME is
recognized as the largest public employee and health care workers
union in the United
States. It organizes its membership and lobbies on
behalf of public issues such as health care, pension security,
women’s issues and taxes.
This is the first major endorsement by any
labor organization in this Assembly race. Albert Baldeo also has the
support of Senate Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson and
Congressman Gregory Meeks, and retains the most cash on hand out of
the other candidates vying for the seat.
The 38th Assembly district includes the
neighborhoods of Ridgewood, Glendale, Richmond Hill, Ozone Park and Woodhaven. The Democratic primary will
be held on September 15th, 2009.
